Stanley® Revisits A Bygone Era of Quality and Craftsmanship
By Re-Introducing Five New Sweetheart™ Premium Hand Planes

NEW YORK, NY - JUNE 25, 2009 – Stanley® announced today the introduction of five new Sweetheart™ premium hand planes during its new product luncheon at the Westin Times Square in New York City. Chris Woolley, leader of the company’s Assembly & Demolition Strategic Business Unit said, “Our heritage in premium hand planes dates all the way back to 1870, which is why our company takes so seriously its place in hand tool history. We are certain that the new line of Stanley® planes will once again capture the hearts of professional woodworkers, cabinet makers, and boat builders alike. Their mechanical precision, simple adjustment features, and top-quality grade materials are once again worthy of the famous Sweetheart™ logo … a distinction that professionals, collectors and tool enthusiasts all recognize as a coveted symbol of hand plane quality.”

The line-up of five new Stanley® Sweetheart premium hand planes includes a no.4 smoothing bench plane, a No. 62 low angle jack plane, a No.92 shoulder/chisel plane, a No. 60-1/2 block plane, and a No. 9-1/2 block plane. Each one touts a host of quality-driven features, which are backed by a limited lifetime warranty. For example, a user-friendly mechanical adjustment opens and closes the mouth quickly and precisely in just seconds (not available on the No. 92 plane). To perform the mouth adjustment, simply loosen the knob, slide the adjuster to the desired setting, and then tighten the knob back to secure it into place. According to Woolley, “This is a vast improvement over those hand planes that require the dreaded trial-and-error method of adjustment.”

The new planes also feature a thicker blade, constructed from A2 steel, which is far superior to high carbon steel because of its ability to hold a sharper edge for an extended period of time. They feature a heavier, more durable body cast from ductile iron to help reduce chatter and dampen vibration. Additionally, each of the new planes offers a precision-machined base for accuracy and performance. Their solid brass knobs maintain the aesthetics of traditional quality hand planes while also using a softer metal to tighten down on critical steel components such as the blade and/or casting.

No. 4 Smoothing Bench Plane
The No. 4 is a general purpose smoothing bench plane designed for finishing, dimensioning, and smoothing wood. It can tackle large applications such as boat-building as well as small ones like intricate furniture projects. A patent-pending lateral locking adjustment helps users to make a heavier cut on one side as well as compensate for imperfections made in the grind. Traditional hand planes rely on friction to secure the lateral adjustment, but the No. 4 Stanley® premium hand plane provides a firm lock-down to ensure that the blade doesn’t drift during use. The tool’s base and frog are machined as one piece to reduce chatter and provide added stability. Currently available at woodworking supply stores, the No. 4 smoothing bench plane is expected to sell for an approximate retail price of $179.

No. 62 Low Angle Jack Plane
The No. 62 low angle jack plane is a very versatile tool that can perform a variety of bench work applications such as tapering, joining, and smoothing edges with a shooting board. This specific plane does a particularly good job when working with figured wood thanks to a lower angle of cut. Featuring a Norris-style adjustment mechanism, the No. 62 plane can make precise depth of cut adjustments quickly and easily. Like the No. 4 plane, this model offers a solid cherry knob and handle for added comfort.

The tool’s base and frog are machined as one piece to reduce chatter and provide added stability. Currently available at woodworking supply stores, the No. 62 low angle jack plane is expected to sell for an approximate retail price of $179.

No. 60-1/2 Low Angle Block Plane
Perfect for a one-handed operation, the No. 60-1/2 block plane is an all-purpose trimming tool that is ideal for planing against the grain as well as table-top applications like chamfering edges or shortening tenons. User-friendly adjustments allow the user to work quickly and precisely without the normal frustrations of trial-and-error.

Its base and frog are machined as one piece to reduce chatter and provide added stability. Currently available at woodworking supply stores, the No. 60-1/2 low angle block plane is expected to sell for an approximate retail price of $99.99.

No. 9-1/2 Block Plane
Also designed for one-handed operation, the No. 9-1/2 block plane is an all-purpose trimming tool for table-top applications such as chamfering edges or shortening tenons. User-friendly adjustments allow the user to work quickly and precisely without the normal frustrations of trial-and-error.

Its base and frog are machined as one piece to reduce chatter and provide added stability. Currently available at woodworking supply stores, the No. 9-1/2 smoothing bench plane is expected to sell for an approximate retail price of $99.99.

No. 92 Shoulder/Chisel Plane
The No. 92 is a dual-purpose plane used in joinery applications that require precision when working up against a shoulder. Some common applications include creating mortise & tenons and cutting into 90-degree corners. Currently available at woodworking supply stores, the No. 92 shoulder/chisel plane is expected to sell for an approximate retail price of $149.
